Music – An Integral Part of Our Worship Service
Music is an important way to draw closer to God through singing the lyrics of the hymns. At Pilgrim Congregational Church, music is integral to the worship service. We have an adult chancel choir to lead singing the hymns and perform anthems during the service. Led by professional musicians, Tom Paster, Music Director and Nicholas Tino, Organist, the choir has been praised for its beautiful tone and interesting repertoire.
Children in the Sunday school are also exposed to the many hymns and songs that are age appropriate. They sing several times each year during the worship service, as well as the family Christmas pageant on Christmas Eve.
During Advent, we are fortunate to have the Christmas Band perform for us as part of our Advent Dinner. Paul Gomperz, a founding member of our church, gathers a group of amateur and professional musicians from the community who welcome the Advent season with joyous brass and woodwinds performing favorite Christmas carols and music in the sanctuary. They are joined by an exceptional group of jazz musicians called Brass in Black – students at Watchung Hills Regional High School and their talented director to add a special touch to the festive event.
We also take our music to members who are homebound or experiencing special circumstances when we go caroling at Christmastime. This is a joyous time of fellowship as all in the congregation are invited to participate, reach out to our members and regroup for warmth and holiday cheer.
Our Advent season would not be complete without the glorious Candlelight Service of readings and hymns on Christmas Eve. The sanctuary is aglow with the poinsettias, firs, candles and a string quartet while we rejoice in hearing the Christmas story told through scripture readings and hymns.
At Easter, the choir is joined by a brass ensemble featuring trumpets to welcome the glorious news of the risen Christ.
Music is an important feature at non-worship events at Pilgrim Congregational Church. Café Broadway, a magical afternoon of music, wine and mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres in a Cabaret setting features singers from the choir and guest singers to entertain at a light-hearted fellowship event.
